Better than the Rest?

October 16, 2010

From birth till death one is in a state of competition with his or her siblings, class fellows, colleagues, and society as a whole. Its human nature, and that’s just the way it is! However, there is an interesting relationship between competition and the company one keeps. This might sound odd, but let me explain it to you.

The company you keep has a great impact on you. For those who are easily influenced by others, there is an obvious affect on them, as they try to imitate what their peers do in order to be accepted among them. But there are a few people who feel that they are strong enough to stick to their norms no matter what company they keep, and may be that is possible. I personally disagree with that, as it is impossible not to get stung by a single bee if you are in the middle of a swarm! But lets give those people the benefit of doubt, there are still other ways they are negatively affected. When you get good grades, and your friends lie in the lower bracket of the class, then you feel that you are good enough and don’t need improvement. There is always room for improvement! But the problem is, there is no competition! Your growth becomes stagnant and you always tell yourself that you are better than the rest so there is no need to improve! The same thing happens when you are doing good deeds. Lets take the example of saying our prayers. You pray five times a day, or maybe four times, as you aren’t able to wake up for the morning prayers. On the other hand, your friends only pray occasionally. Among them you’ll consider yourself better than the rest! You  won’t try to improve the quality of your prayers or try waking up in the morning so you don’t miss your morning prayers. But if you are the one who prays occasionally, and your friends are regular in their prayers, you will naturally feel the urge to compete with them and do better!

What is our goal? To become better human beings, to please Allah? Or are we just going to keep living the way we do, and hope that it’ll be enough to get us through on the Day of Accountability? By the looks of it, we’re far far away from “enough”! But it’s never to late to make the change! May Allah give us all the strength to get out of our cocoons and become the beautiful butterflies which give color to this world! Ameen!!

I really liked this part: By the looks of it, we’re far far away from “enough”! But it’s never to late to make the change! May Allah give us all the strength to get out of our cocoons and become the beautiful butterflies which give color to this world!

We have what we need! Now we have to get beyond the scarcity mentality and realize that we’ve been blessed with abundance.
